Desmond, The Finale and Flashes Before Your Eyes.

Here's the reason for the non-crash, imo:

Desmond, as seen in Flashes Before Your Eyes, wound up in his body, at time when he and Penny were together, with fragmented memories of having been on the island. Not just having been on an island, but having lived through the period of time we saw him in.

It caused his memories of the soccer/football game in the bar, and of the bartender getting hit in the head by Jimmy Lennon with a cricket paddle.

This episode showed us Desmond, happy to be getting a second chance with Penny while not exactly sure why he was happy. Again, his island experience/memories were fragmented. He was left with feelings and impressions rather than concrete proof or solid distinct memories.

Until Hawking told him otherwise.

Desmond goes to buy a ring for Penny. Hawking tells him You don't buy the ring Desmond. That what he's doing is going against what he's suppose to do.

Desmond argues that he can do whatever he bloody well wants.

Hawking, essentially, is telling Desmond that he has no choice. Mother told Jacob that he had no choice. Both were convinced, in the end despite their arguments, that they had to do what Hawking/Mother were telling them

I always believed that Desmond, having consciousness time travelled to a point in his life that he had already lived, did indeed possess the freewill to make a different choice. He didn't make that choice, he was goaded by Hawking into making the same choices that led him to the island in the first place.

Now, Jacob told the candidates that they had the freewill to choose to accept or deny the position, be damned the consequences. They could all say no.

This flies in the face of what Hawking said, that the universe would always have it's way. Free will be damned, essentially.

So we have Desmond, who turned the Swan failsafe, travelled back in his mind to a point in his life he already lived and instead of making a different choice he's pushed into maknig the same ones.

We have Widmore who showed us if we didn't already know, that Desmond could withstand crazy emounts of electromagnetism.

In the finale I think we'll see Desmond perform a similar action as he did in the Swan. Something involving the heart of the island. I don't think it'll be a key he has to turn, but his function is to get close to the epicenter of all the time travel shenanigens and EM, because he can, and he's going to "turn the key", for lack of a better term.

In doing that, I think Desmond will again consciousness time travel to a point in his life prior to coming to the island, but that this time he makes a choice that changes his path to the island. He isn't goaded by Hawking or anyone else into believing he has no choice In exercising his freewill, it changes the entire course of the Lostie's lives.

We see Desmond on the plane. That, to me, has always been the biggest difference in the timelines. Desmond on the plane means he never went to the island. He's never in the Swan, the button never gets pushed.

In Desmond making a different choice, it creates the Lostie stories in the non-crash. I don't think Juliet created the sideways by detonating Jughead. I think that act just kept in line the 815 crash timeline that we saw.

And Desmond, with his uniqueness, is the only one able to do this. To get close enough to "the heart of the island" with out dying or becoming detatched from himself.

I think there's a good chance that Jack and Hurley and everyone who's left dies in the island timeline trying to stop Smocke. That they may sacrifice themselves for a greater good in trying to stop him.

Desmond is responsible for creating the non-crash thru his actions in the finale. He may even be aided in acting as a failsafe by the C4 that's still inside Ben's backpack. Bet you forgot about that C4 already didn't you?

I gotta stop now, before I ramble and before my computer fails again today. But I think that's it. That's Desmond's purpose. He's the facilitator for epiphanies in the sideways now, the reconnection with the island experiences for the Losties, and he'll be the one, imo, who creates that timeline and its circumstances to begin with.

HURLEY: Where is it you think you know me from?

LIBBY: Um, I'm not sure. [sits back] I, I know it won't make sense.

HURLEY: Try me.

LIBBY: [leans forward] A few days ago I was watching TV and one of your commercials came on. It was the one with you talking about your chicken with its recipe of four deep-frying lards, and eight secret herbs and spices...

HURLEY: The four cooking lards lock in the flavor of the eight spices, by the way.

LIBBY: Eh, right.

HURLEY: I made that up. We've been using it in our advertisingng blitz for months now.

LIBBY and HURLEY: "And the fourth lard is vegetable based. so you know its healthy!"

HURLEY: Aaah, you know the commercial very well. Actually the deep-frying frying lard is only two percent vegetable, and its a pretty crappy vegetable at that. And we hydrogenate the hell out of it. But it sells a lot of chicken so....

LIBBY: Hugo, please! I'm trying to explain something to you.

HURLEY: Sorry, go ahead.

LIBBY: And the moment that I saw you, it was like I was hit over the head. All these memories came washing back, of my life, only [pause] it was [pause] another life.

HURLEY: Were you eating my Mr. Cluck's chicken at the time.

LIBBY: Um, yes, I had just had some takeout.

HURLEY: It was a fat and salt high, then. We hear about those things all the time. One time there was a guy who said he was my long lost dad. I gave him a four dollars off a bucket coupon, and told him to go bug off.

LIBBY: Hugo, let me finish!

HURLEY: I'm sorry. What kind of memories?

LIBBY: There was a plane crash and, uh, I was on an island.

HURLEY: And I was there?

LIBBY: I think so.

HURLEY: Was there any chicken on this island?

LIBBY: No, but plenty of roasted boar.

HURLEY: Swee-eet!

LIBBY: We [pause] knew each other. We [pause] liked each other. And then when I got here, it was almost like I'd been here before and for some reason, Hugo, I have a memory of you being here, too.

[Hurley looks around.]

HURLEY: Um, this is the first time I've ever been in a mental hospital.

LIBBY: Yeah, I know, but I can't get you out of my brain. That's why the other night when I saw you, I had to talk to you because if you remembered me...

HURLEY: I wish I could, Libby, but [pause] I can't.

[Libby nods, closes her eyes and holds back tears.]

HURLEY: I'm sorry.

LIBBY: It's okay.

[Libby wipes away a tear.]

LIBBY: It's okay. [chuckles] I'm crazy.

HURLEY: Yeah, probably, but we all got something, right? I mean, it takes a lot of guts to go up to a total stranger and tell them you know them from bizarre, alternate universe.

[They smile at each other.]

HURLEY: I'm scared just saying, "hi" to a girl.

LIBBY: [chuckles] You're doing fine.

[Hurley chuckles and looks around the room again. He sees a man in the corner eating a fried chicken]

HURLEY: Hey, can you ever, like get outta here? Um, on a day pass or...

LIBBY: Yeah, I'm here voluntarily.

HURLEY: Well, would you like to do something?

LIBBY: You mean [pause] a date?

HURLEY: Uh, yeah.

LIBBY: I'd love that.

HURLEY: Let's go, then.

[Hurley and Libby start walking out of the ward.]

HURLEY: Um hold, on second....Dude, are you gonna finish that? [to the man who was eating the fried chicken]

THE CHICKEN EATING PATIENT: Eh, no.

[The man hands Hurley the last drumstick.]

HURLEY: Thanks, dude.

LIBBY: See ya' later, Lenny.

THE CHICKEN EATING PATIENT: Later!.......Okay, Where was I? Oh yeah. Four lards, eight herbs and spices, fifteen minutes deep-frying, sixteen minutes re-deep-frying, twenty-three specific strands of DNA in each chicken, forty-two locations and growing ...[takes a breath]...Four lards, eight herbs and spices, fifteen minutes deep-frying, sixteen...

[fadeout]
Erik was not a believer in his father’s wild tales about a mysterious island, nor was he thrilled about the fact that he had acquired funds for his journey through illegal slave trade, which had been abolished in the British Empire almost fifty years prior. In order to protect the family name, Erik made the decision to cover up his father’s disappearance and to sell the New World Sea Traders in Magnus’ name.

The new owners, the East Ocean Trade Group, did not continue the slave trade practice and instead used legitimate business practices. Out of respect for his father, Erik did not destroy the first mate’s ledger, but kept it as a family heirloom. Over time, the entire story of the Island became just a legend in the Hanso family.

Nigel Widmore had a son named Preston Widmore, who in turn would later become the father of Charles Widmore. The societal customs of the Widmore family were passed down from father to son, even though their families back home were now inaccessible. This was done as much to preserve the family’s traditions as it was a sort of quiet rebellion against fully integrating into the Others’ way of life.

Many years later, the location of the Black Rock was discovered by the Others. By then the slaves who had been shackled inside had died of starvation and thirst. It was decided that the dynamite would be left inside the ship, as it was felt that it was too dangerous to attempt to transport it through the Dark Territory, where the Smoke Monster resided. Magnus became greatly adored by the Others, and when he passed away Richard buried him in the Dark Territory next to the Black Rock.

Because the wheel had only been turned a minimal amount, the distance the Island traveled was very small as well—just far enough to be located where the Black Rock had previously been. Instead of being located just offshore, the ship was now trapped far inland, in the Island’s Dark Territory. Shortly after climbing out of the well they had dug, they were approached by Richard and the Others. When Magnus asked who they were and how long they had been on the Island, Richard merely responded that they had been on the Island for a long time.

Richard also said that he had been sent to rescue Magnus and his crew. Widmore asked Richard who sent him, and Richard responded that he was sent by a man named Jacob. Magnus eventually comes to trust Richard, and despite many misgivings from Widmore, he and his crew joined Richard and became Others. Magnus was delighted to learn that it was necessary for all Others to learn Latin, in which he was already fluent. He helped Richard teach it to the rest of his crew.

The crew immediately set about exploring the Island, looking to see if they could discover anything miraculous or out of the ordinary.
From Papua New Guinea he continued to sail east, in search of the Island. This was the last time the Black Rock was ever heard from again. Later, he made the decision to bring a business partner into this venture, a wealthy friend of the Hanso family by the name of Nigel Widmore. When Magnus had enough funds, he hired a crew of 40, along with an unknown number of slaves. Widmore also went along, leaving his family behind to take care of the family fortune. Likewise, Magnus left the Hanso family’s business dealings in the care of his son Erik Hanso.

During his travels, Magnus had met a young Dutch woman named Hannah. She captivated him, as she was unlike any of the other women he’d ever met before. She was extremely intelligent, had a good sense of humor and challenged his thinking on many occasions. For an educated man like Magnus, this impressed him greatly. His own wife had died many years ago after giving birth to his son Erik, and he had never remarried. Magnus and Hannah would sometimes speak to one another in Latin, one of the secondary languages they spoke fluently. The two fell in love, and their relationship quickly escalated. Soon Hannah became pregnant, which concerned her because she feared that her parents would not approve. They were Christians from the Dutch Reformed Church and were staunchly religious.

Hannah expressed her desire to travel to America and start a new life there to hide her shame from her family. Magnus was greatly saddened by this, as it meant that they would most likely never see one another again. But he gave her a large sum of money and made arrangements for her safe passage to America. Upon arrival in New York, Hannah took the last name of DeGroot. This was in honor of Magnus’ name, which is the Latin form of the Dutch name DeGroot. The DeGroot family migrated east over the decades, settling in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Hannah’s great-great-grandson, born in 1930, was Gerald DeGroot, who was the co-founder of the DHARMA Initiative.

He was so enamored by the first mate’s descriptions of the fantastic Island that he purchased the entire New World Sea Traders, who had by then made repairs to the Black Rock and reinstated it into their fleet. As they were quickly running short on supplies, they began searching for any sign of land they could find. Eventually they spotted the Island and sent a small boat ashore, which included the first mate. Once on the Island they began to experience strange phenomena and unexplained rapid healing. They also found many strange ruins, for which the first mate drew a rough map of their locations on the Island. Believing to have found a place of miracles, they quickly decided to return to England to bring back to the Island more men and supplies. The last notation in the ledger is that they had set sail away from the Island, headed for England. Presumably, they came across pirates shortly after leaving the Island, and were all killed.

The ship, which was then owned by the New World Sea Traders, was lost at sea. The first mate’s ledger was discovered seven years later in 1852 among the artifacts of pirates on Île Sainte-Marie, an island off the coast of Madagascar. The Black Rock was also discovered around that time, although its crew could not be found. Whether they were killed or lost at sea is unknown. Only the ledger gave any indication of where the ship had been during those seven years.
